HOW TO: Change the Windows shell.
Solution:
Edit the 'SHELL=' command in the SYSTEM.INI file (NOT RECOMMENDED).
CAUTION: The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Run...'. (The 'Run' dialog box appears.)
3) In the 'Open' drop-down list box, type:
SYSTEM.INI
4) Click 'OK'. (SYSTEM.INI opens.)
5) Make a backup copy of SYSTEM.INI.
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
SYSTEM.BAK
c) Click 'Save'.
6) Locate the 'SHELL=' statement.
7) Type the correct path and name of the alternate shell program.
8) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'.
9) Save the file as SYSTEM.INI in the C:\WINDOWS directory.
